If you are passionate about spacecraft design, we invite you to join the Flight Systems Engineering, Integration and Test Section. We provide systems engineering for the design and implementation of spacecraft for the laboratory’s key flight projects. Our work spans spacecraft systems engineering, payload systems integration, electrical systems integration, fault protection and autonomy design, landing systems design, spacecraft assembly and test, systems verification and validation, and systems modeling.


We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Systems engineer Level 3 to join the System Testbed Engineering Group. Reporting functionally to the Systems Testbed Engineering Group Supervisor and programmatically to the Systems Testbed Lead, you will be responsible to ensure that the system testing is successfully accomplished according to the plan. You will author procedures and work in the testbed, and will also attend project meetings and work with other team members to accomplish project goals.


In addition, you will regularly meet with the team, assessing status, reviewing problems, planning short-term and long-term activities as well as presenting test results at project reviews and meetings.


Tasks Include:

  • Test and integrate spacecraft hardware and software
  • Assess complex issues and recommend resolution to the team and management; implement resolutions
  • Develop the technical, operational, and functional requirements as well as the interface agreements of the System Testbed
  • Work in a lab facility with hardware, ground support equipment and test equipment
  • Assure that the quality, accuracy, and integrity of the System Testbed technical documentation, reports, and deliverables comply with JPL standards, project plans, and policies

Specific near-term tasks include gaining an in-depth knowledge of the Mars 2020 Power and Avionics subsystems; developing fault injections; leading test planning efforts; verifying and validating these subsystems. Other tasks include maintaining the system testbeds; researching, developing, authoring, executing, and reporting on test procedures; assisting other testbed team members with their procedures and activities; documenting, investigating and closing problems.


You may work on tasks such as preparing and presenting testbed information and data at meetings and reviews; certifying the testbed; completing the system level Verification and Validation of the Mars 2020 flight system; designing and executing Operational Readiness Tests; designing and executing Mission Scenario Tests.


The qualified candidate will have experience in the following areas: System Testbed operations, architecture, design; System Verification and Validation; Systems Engineering


Minimum technical qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred; will also consider bachelor’s degree in other engineering disciplines, physical sciences, or mathematics with a minimum of 6 years of professional experience, or Master’s degree with 4 years of experience, or Ph.D with 2 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in testing Avionics and Power subsystems
  • Proficiency in resolving issues in test development, troubleshooting, training, and interaction with project and line management in order to ensure that project and line deliverables are met on schedule
  • Proficiency in exercising discretion and judgment in evaluating potential approaches and solutions to critical problems and determining appropriate resolutions
  • Proficiency in recommending deviations from established policies and procedures
  • Ability to attend to assignments with limited direction
  • Understanding and application of standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques in aerospace systems engineering


The most competitive candidates will satisfy some of the following:


  • JPL/NASA mission experience
  • Experience in system integration and test of spacecraft or flight instruments
  • Experience developing, executing, and reporting on automated and manual test procedures
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems using various types of test equipment
  • Experience handling and testing Engineering Models and Flight Hardware
  • Proficiency in advising management on system architecture, technical results, or risks
  • Knowledge of Jet Propulsion Laboratory policies and procedures, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations across a range of applications
  • Knowledge of industry and/or academic practices and standards in Systems Engineering
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (Python, Ruby)
  • Willingness to obtain a security clearance if applying from outside Section 313
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred; will also consider bachelor’s degree in other engineering disciplines, physical sciences, or mathematics with a minimum of 6 years of professional experience, or master’s degree with 4 years of experience, or doctorate with 2 years of experience.
