If you are passionate about spacecraft design, we invite you to join the Flight Systems Engineering, Integration and Test Section. We provide systems engineering for the design and implementation of spacecraft for the laboratory’s key flight projects. Our work spans spacecraft systems engineering, payload systems integration, electrical systems integration, fault protection and autonomy design, landing systems design, spacecraft assembly and test, systems verification and validation, and systems modeling.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Systems Engineer level 4 to join the System Integration, Test, and Launch Systems Engineering Group. You will report administratively to the Group Supervisor for Systems Integration, Test, and Launch Systems Engineering (313B), and programmatically to the SI&T Manager as your primary technical stakeholder. You will work on tasks such as system level approach to testing for purposes of both verification and validation, requirements for EGSE and facilities, and ensuring safe and efficient approaches to testing of the flight system. You will lead a team at JPL and at the launch site, and work with flight systems engineers, instrument engineers, avionics engineers, and mechanical engineers.
Your initial assignment will be to serve as a SI&T Systems Engineering Lead working on the group’s deliverables on the Europa Clipper Project. Specific near-term tasks include completion of any remaining planning/design matters, SI&T requirements closeout, procedure development, and strategically teaming with the system testbed team to coordinate system tests. As the team builds you will focus on leadership and mentoring of the SI&T Systems Engineering Team, assigning and monitoring tasks, reporting progress or issues to the SI&T Manager and working closely with the SI&T Electrical Systems and Mechanical teams.
You may work on tasks such as designing and defining behavioral type testing of key space vehicle functions on a flight system, which will include how subsystems and the payloads interact/interface with each other.
Other job responsibilities may include:
- Coordination and reporting of resources, schedule, and technical performance
- Scheduling of the SI&T System Engineering Team to support test activities
- Generation of system level test procedures
- Requirement specification
- Anomaly resolution
- Verification and Validation support
- Testbed system testing and data review
The qualified candidate has experience in the design and verification and validation phases of a project, with a focus on integrated systems. Minimum technical qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics with a minimum of 9 years of professional experience, or master’s degree with 7 years of experience, or Ph.D with 5 years of experience.
- Recent flight project implementation experience as a system engineer in one of the following areas: flight system, integration and test, subsystem, or equivalent.
- First-principles working knowledge of all major spacecraft subsystems.
- Extensive understanding and application of principles, theories, concepts, and techniques used in system engineering and solving engineering problems.
- Significant experience in successfully leading project working groups on tasks for meeting on-time delivery of technical design products in subsystem or bus development, primarily for electrical hardware, assemblies, and mechanical systems; experience with development and delivery of system documentation (requirements, test plans, procedures, and design description documents).
- Ability to lead the activities and to synthesize the unique discipline knowledge of a broad range of technical subject matter experts (SME’s); Ability to deal with multiple issues, tasks, and priorities concurrently; excellent collaboration, negotiations, oral, and written communication, and presentation skills.
The most competitive candidates will satisfy some of the following:
- In-depth experience on flight projects in requirement development, integration and test and/or verification and validation.
- Experience with guidance and control aspects of system engineering, including system software specification, development, and test; payloads and instruments; knowledge of project ground data systems and mission operations teams.
- Extensive experience planning for and leading complex hardware and/or software integration activities
- Understanding and hands-on experience of JPL and NASA policies and procedures, JPL Flight Project Practices and Design Principles, and JPL system engineering practices; demonstrated ability to tailor the planning and execution of these on missions of various risk classes.
- Proven ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multi-organizational team; ability to work on major project assignments without appreciable direction with accountability for technical performance
- Willingness to obtain a security clearance if applying from outside Section 313
